El fundamento cient\u00edfico debe ser del m\u00e1s alto nivel posible, y a su vez debe ser autorizado por expertos de la <i>European Food Safety Authority<\/i> (EFSA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A pesar de la exigencia cient\u00edfica exigida,\u00a0diversos beneficios\u00a0para la salud son generalente atribuidos a estos productos en el etiquetado. Por tanto, quiz\u00e1 cabr\u00eda preguntarse: \u00bfson m\u00e1s un medicamento que un alimento? Si la respuesta es que se asemejan m\u00e1s al efecto de un medicamento,\u00a0posiblemente el\u00a0superior rigor cient\u00edfico que la ley exige a la industria farmac\u00e9utica para publicitar deber\u00eda ser similar al que se aplica sobre las declaraciones del etiquetado de los alimentos funcionales.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asimismo, habida cuenta\u00a0que la mayor\u00eda de los ensayos cl\u00ednicos que se realizan con estos productos son simplemente <em>contra placebo<\/em>, y no contra otros productos ni contra otros f\u00e1rmacos -como se le requiere a los medicamentos-, no existe la\u00a0evidencia cient\u00edfica suficiente\u00a0que justifique\u00a0determinadas declaraciones de etiquetado,\u00a0que se amparan en\u00a0una ambig\u00fcedad legislativa que proporciona a la industria la posibilidad de publicitar dichos alimentos con declaraciones poco claras, que los consumidores\u00a0pueden interpretar como \u00abcurativas\u00bb, \u00abpreventivas\u00bb e incluso \u00abmilagrosas\u00bb. Por ello, deber\u00eda adoptarse una postura m\u00e1s rigurosa y exigir que se establezca una definici\u00f3n clara de esta clase de productos.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Alimentos funcionales: el caso Actimel<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Desde septiembre de 2011 est\u00e1 prohibida la publicidad de Actimel<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> en Francia como consecuencia de los resultados de una investigaci\u00f3n realizada por Didier Raoult, quien concluye que la incorporaci\u00f3n de probi\u00f3ticos, especialmente en productos l\u00e1cteos fermentados, podr\u00eda producir una ganancia excesiva de peso\u00a0en algunos animales. Este estudio alerta sobre la importancia de la evidencia cient\u00edfica de alta calidad para avalar la verdadera efectividad y seguridad del uso de los alimentos funcionales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tambi\u00e9n\u00a0Reino Unido ha extremado la precauci\u00f3n y ha restringido el uso de ciertas campa\u00f1as publicitarias, por considerar que los mensajes transmitidos no se ajustaban a la realidad\u00a0por carecer de criterios cient\u00edficos los respaldaran. En Espa\u00f1a tambi\u00e9n se han empezado a interponer demandas judiciales contra determinadas declaraciones publicitarias.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Alimentos funcionales: conclusiones<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A pesar de que el efecto real de los alimentos funcionales no est\u00e1 confirmado y su coste es mayor que el de un alimento normal que pueda aportar beneficios similares, los alimentos funcionales gozan de gran\u00a0\u00abvalor social\u00bb entre los consumidores, sobre todo\u00a0por sus supuestos efectos beneficiosos para la salud, como as\u00ed demuestran diversas encuestas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En estas condiciones cabr\u00eda preguntarse si la labor de los profesionales sanitarios est\u00e1 siendo sobrepasada por los mensajes que entrega la industria alimentaria, mediante varios medios publicitarios, sobre todo televisivos.\u00a0Teniendo en cuenta la gran confianza que los consumidores parecen depositar en tales mensajes y que indudablemente pueden producir confusi\u00f3n, los profesionales de la salud deben tener cuidado a la hora de recomendar estos productos, y advertir sobre posibles riesgos en el excesivo uso que se hace de ellos, o en el reemplazo de la medicaci\u00f3n recetada por el profesional.
